Mike’s friend Larry Brown has just been admitted into Columbia University. It is a very well-known educational institution in New York City, State of New York. Larry is so happy and his family is so proud of him. Mike and Mai Lan called to congratulate him last week. They will get together to celebrate soon.

MIKE: No. It’s not easy to get admitted to Columbia University. It’s one of the Ivy League.

MAI LAN: What’s the Ivy League?

MIKE: Ivy I-V-Y League L-E-A-G-U-E. The Ivy League schools are the most selective colleges in the US. They are top-ranked in academics and their faculties include award-winning professors. These schools can also boast of beautiful and historic campuses.

MAI LAN: So, what are the schools in the Ivy League?

MIKE: They are:
Brown Univwersity in Providence, Rhode Island
Columbia University in New York City, New York
Cornell University in Ithaca, New York
Darmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire

MAI LAN: Three universities and one college?

MIKE: In the US, University and College are the same; their Bachelor’s degree requires four to five years of study. A Community College is different, generally it offers 2-year programs, not a Bachelor’s degree.
Tại Hoa Kỳ, trường University và College như nhau ; bằng cấp Cử Nhân của họ đòi hỏi 4-5 năm học. Trường Community College thì khác, thường thường có 2 năm học, không cấp bằng Cử Nhân.
MAI LAN: So, these four institutions are in the Ivy League?

MIKE: No, no. That’s not all. There’re four more:
Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Princeton University in Princeton, New jersey
Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut

MIKE: All of them are well-known. They only admit the cream of the crop!

MAI LAN: Cream of the crop?
Cream of the crop?
MIKE: Yes. Cream C-R-E-A-M- of the crop C-R-O-P. That means the best of all.
Đúng. Cream C-R-E-A-M- of the crop C-R-O-P. Nghĩa là thành phần ưu tú nhất.
MAI LAN: I guess the cream is the tastiest part of the milk.
Tôi đoán cream là phần ngon nhất của sữa.
MIKE: Well, it is the richest part of the milk; it rises to the top when the milk is processed.
À đó là phần mỡ màng nhất trong sữa, nó nổi lên khi người ta làm sữa .
MAI LAN: Ah, so the cream of the crop means the best of all.
À. Vậy the cream of the crop có nghĩa là phần tốt nhất.
MIKE: Yes. We can say Jill and Jane are the cream of the crop in our class and Larry’s car is the cream of the crop.
Đúng. Chúng ta có thể nói Jill và Jane là thành phần ưu tú nhất trong lớp mình và xe của Larry là xe sang nhất.
MAI LAN: So all the students of the Ivy League schools are the cream of the crop?

MIKE: Well, most of them, I suppose. But many who are the cream of the crop do not choose to attend these schools. Their tuition is very high, not affordable to all, and some prefer to go to universities and colleges closer to their home.
Ồ, phần đông,theo tôi nghĩ. Nhưng nhiều thành phần ưu tú không chọn các trường đó. Học phí rất cao, không phải ai cũng trả được, và một số lại thích đi học tại các trường gần nhà hơn.
MAI LAN: These schools are truly prestigious, but many other schools offer excellent opportunities, too. Don’t you think so?
Các trường này thật là danh tiếng nhưng nhiều trường khác cũng cho ta có cơ hội thật xuất sắc. Anh nghĩ thế không ?
MIKE: Absolutely. Stanford University in California, CALTECH California Institute of Technology, Georgetown University in Washington DC, University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and many more...
