Mai Lan’s and Mike’s families are going to the beach today. Yesterday, Mai Lan prepared the food to take with them to eat there. She packed a variety of snacks: coconut cookies, cashew nuts and raisins, fruits – oranges, clementines and peaches – and three kinds of sandwiches – scrambled egg, ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly. All are really excited about the day at the beach.

MAI LAN: Mike, can you help bring these bags to the car? And please, handle with care! We don’t want to smash up the food.

MIKE: Sure, Mai Lan. I’ll be right there. Oh, you told me about the food we’re taking. What about the drinks?

MAI LAN: A wink? What’s that?

MIKE: A wink W-I-N-K is a quick movement of the eyelids, opening and closing the eyes quickly.

MAI LAN: Martin didn’t sleep a wink last night, now he’s tired. And so, usually he’s already slow, now he’s even slower. Can I say he’s a slow slowpoke?
